Hutchinson Center presents a two-day program on Intimate Partner Violence

Belfast, Maine — A professional development program, Intimate Partner Violence: From Knowledge to Action, will be offered May 21–22 at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center.

The two-day program, from 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. each day, is designed for social workers, substance abuse counselors and other mental health professionals, as well as clergy, police officers and first responders. The fee is $135 per person and $60 per University of Maine student, with need-based scholarships available. A continental breakfast and catered lunch will be provided each day.

By Jan. 1, 2020 an applicant for social work license renewal must demonstrate a one-time successful completion of the equivalent of 12 hours of continuing education or coursework in family and intimate partner violence.

The program, which provides 12 contact hours, will include the following topics: understanding Intimate Partner Violence; basic history, policy and practice of intimate partner violence intervention; community resources, cultural factors and the impact on assessment, intervention and policy; same gender/transgender abuse dynamics; integrative understanding of clinical practices in intimate partner violence, and evidence-based risk assessment and screening; referral and intervention strategies; and intimate partner violence across the lifespan.

Featured speakers will come from multiple community organization, including the UMaine School of Social Work and the Division of Student Life, Maine Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Partners for Peace, New Hope for Women, Health Equity Alliance, Pine Tree Legal, Penobscot Nation and the Maine State Department of Human Services.
