University of Maine Hutchinson Center  announces the art exhibit ‘What’s Art Got to Do With It?’

Twenty-nine portraits by award-winning Maine photographer Lynn Karlin are featured in the exhibit “What’s Art Got to Do With It?” through early March 2020 at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center.

A free public opening reception will be held on Friday, Dec. 13 from 5:30-7 p.m. at the center. To request a reasonable accommodation or for more information, contact Nancy Bergerson, 207.338.8049.

Karlin’s photographs have won awards in Paris, London and elsewhere. Over two-plus years, she photographed more than 50 individuals, including artist Eric Hopkins, Liberty Graphics founder Tom Opper, and former Belfast poet laureate Jacob Fricke.

Also on exhibit are works by art activists Penny Linn and Natasha Mayers, ceramics artist Miles Frieden, Richard Desrosier and others.

An 8-foot by 16-foot community mural will be on display, inspired by the designs and words of Waldo County residents, and created under the direction of Louise Marks. Community input for the mural was collected through Project Connect boxes placed in public locations throughout Belfast.

The exhibit was included in a recent three-day opioid conference that featured writing, visual arts, performance, theater and music as a powerful lens through which to view Maine’s opioid addiction epidemic.
