The role that art plays in the lives of Maine military veterans, including works that are a means of expression for those who lived through war, is the focus of the exhibition “Veteran Artists,” on display Dec. 16, 2016-March 10, 2017 in Fernald Gallery at the University of Maine Hutchinson Center.
“Veteran Artists,” explores the way that military service impacts the outlook of artists. Using art as their voice, the artists have transformed their lives through the act of creating to heal, communica
te emotions and to urge people to connect with one another.
The exhibit will open with a reception from 5-7 p.m., Dec. 16. Highlighting the reception will be a reading by poet and photographer Suzanne S. Rancourt from her forthcoming manuscript, murmurs at the gate, and other works.
Suzanne S. Rancourt’ book, Billboard in the Clouds, was the winner of the Native Writers’ Circle of the Americas First Book Award. She is a University of Maine alumna and a military veteran of the US Marine Corps and US Army.
Admission to the public reception and exhibit is free.
