(Online) Self-Care for Professionals

Health care worker wearing mask and looking out a windowBetween the COVID-19 pandemic and its repercussions as well as racial injustice rising to the forefront of public consciousness, and political divisions within our families and friends, there’s been a lot to process in the past year, right? Your profession requires you to work with others who are also affected by these extraordinary times and events. But have you been able to take time to slow down and think through your own responses?

This self-care program for clinicians and professionals will give you some of the space you need to process and reflect as well as the skills to help you manage and prevent burn out. Developing a greater awareness of your own emotions, beliefs and responses will help you be better able to hear and acknowledge the emotions, beliefs and responses of others. 

The past few years have shown us an increase in feelings of anger, fear, anxiety, resentment, fury, depression and loneliness. Subsequently, we may see poor coping mechanisms being relied upon (excess drinking, substance use, lack of exercise, intentional isolation, increased social media consumption, extreme fighting, lashing out) by ourselves and the people around us. This online professional development program will bring awareness to our feelings in order to heal ourselves and better support the people around us. It will also help create energy around moving back into the new “normal.”

Together, we’ll develop strategies and share skills of resilience and hardiness. You can then put these strategies and skills into use while working with your clients, supervisors and teams (not to mention with your friends and family!).

As you strengthen yourself, you can use your insight and increased competence to improve your relationships and pass these capabilities on to your clients. With this enhanced insight and empathy, you can create a less anxious experience for yourself and a safer, more professional environment for your clients.

This interactive online program will be offered synchronously via Zoom—you’ll need access to a stable internet connection. There will be breakout sessions to connect with other participants. Participation is encouraged—this is not a recorded session.

portrait of Wendy RapaportWendy Rapaport, L.C.S.W., M.S.W., Psy.D, (she/her/hers) is a licensed clinical psychologist on the faculty at the University of Miami School of Medicine Diabetes Research Institute and the UMaine School of Social Work. She also is in private practice in Boca Raton, Florida, and has specialized in individual, marital, family and group therapy for 40 years. A professional writer, Rapaport has published more than 65 articles and lectures around the country. She was awarded the National Health Information Award for her book, “When Diabetes Hits Home: The Whole Family’s Guide to Emotional Health.” Rapaport is also the author of “Approaches to Behavior: Changing the Dynamic between Patient and Professional in Diabetes Care”, “On the Couch with a Good Enough Poet”, “What do We Tell the Children” and “Friendship Matters”.
