Starting August 1, 2020, the Hutchinson Center will be open to the public for scheduled events of less than twenty per assigned space/room and less than fifty per the building per day.

The safety and well-being of our guests and employees is always our top priority. In following the guidelines provided by the public health authorities and the state of Maine, as well as the University of Maine system, we’ve implemented rigorous cleaning procedures and other best practices, such as social distancing.

Planning on visiting or renting space at the Hutchinson Center?

First things first! Your safety is our priority. Before making an appointment (or entering the building), please review the following questions.

  • Have you been outside of the State of Maine in the past 14 days? (If yes, please refer to state and local guidelines.)
  • Are you experiencing now, or have you experienced in the past 14 days any of the following symptoms: Cough or sore throat, fever or are feeling feverish, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell?
  • Have you been around anyone exhibiting any of the symptoms above within the past 14 days?
  • Are you living with or have you come in close contact with anyone who is sick or quarantined?
  • Has a healthcare professional recommended that you self-isolate or quarantine in the past 14 days?
  • Are you (or any of your close contacts) waiting on the results of a COVID test?

If the answer to ANY of the above questions is yes, please contact a medical professional and do not schedule a trip to the Hutchinson Center at this time.

While we are eager to continue to provide safe meeting space for our community, we encourage you to consider the following questions before renting space:

  • Is everyone in your group willing to wear a face covering/mask for the duration of their visit to the Hutchinson Center?
  • Is it possible that anyone in your group has a pre-existing condition that makes them more susceptible to complications to COVID-19?
  • Is everyone in your group willing to provide their contact information in case contact tracing becomes necessary?
  • Is everyone in your group healthy?
  • Has anyone in your group traveled out of state recently, especially to an area with high COVID-19 positivity rates?

If the answers to any of the above questions is “Yes” or “I don’t know” we encourage you to consider whether or not the Hutchinson Center is the right space for your meeting or event under the current circumstances.

We know this is a challenging time and trust us, we’re right there with you. Masks can be uncomfortable and social distancing can be awkward but our priority is keeping our community safe—and that includes you.

Interested in moving your event/meeting online? We can help. Contact us.

Thank you for your flexibility, compassion and for helping to keep all of us safe.

Here are the proactive measures we’re taking to ensure everyone’s safety and well-being:

Limiting the number of people in the building/shared spaces

Starting August 1, 2020, the Hutchinson Center will be open to the public for scheduled events of less than twenty per assigned space/room and less than fifty per the building per day.

We are limiting event bookings and scheduling them at staggered intervals in order to allow ample time for our fastidious cleaning crew to disinfect spaces.

Only essential staff will be present when visitors are in the building—all non-essential staff will be encouraged to work off-site during events to reduce the number of people in the building.

IT and facility set-up will be completed before the arrival of guests.

Curious about how many people might be in the building on the day of your event? Contact us.

Requiring Face Coverings/Masks

Face coverings/masks are required for all Hutchinson Center visitors and staff. Face coverings must be worn at all times in the building—in open spaces, classrooms, meeting rooms, etc. Face masks will be provided free of charge for any visitors who do not have their own.

This policy also applies to private meetings. Staff members who are in their offices by themselves are not required to wear masks but should have their mask handy in case a visitor/colleague comes by.

For the safety of our community, those in violation of the face covering/mask policy will be asked to leave the premises.

Students who need to request an exemption or accommodation related to the requirement to wear a face covering should contact Student Accessibility Services at 207.581.2319 or Employees who need to request an accommodation or exemption should contact the Office of Equal Opportunity, ADA Coordinator, Amanda Paradis.

Hand Sanitizing

Hand sanitizing stations are provided throughout the building and visitors are strongly encouraged to utilize them, particularly upon entering and exiting the building.

All rooms are cleaned and sanitized daily. High-volume touchpoints throughout our building including restrooms and door entrances/exits are being cleaned and disinfected frequently.

All Hutchinson Center staff members have received training on standard personal preventative measures, using sanitization/disinfection products.

Social Distancing

Social distancing protocols will be in place. All chairs in meeting rooms will be set up six feet apart from each other. Furniture should not be moved.

We encourage anyone thinking about renting space at the Hutchinson Center to think about how social distancing might affect the delivery of their program/meeting. Contact us with any questions or for recommendations.

Contact Tracing

All groups will be required to provide a list of participants and their contact information in the event that contact tracing becomes necessary. If we need to provide information for contact tracing, group organizers would be our primary contact. If a member of your group is diagnosed with or discovered to have been potentially exposed to COVID-19, your group organizer is required to contact the Hutchinson Center immediately. If we discover that any of our staff or guests have been diagnosed with or potentially exposed to COVID-19, we will contact your group organizer immediately.

While we will not be doing temperature checks at our facility, we do ask that if you are not feeling well, have or have recently had a fever, have been in close contact with anyone who has COVID-19 or COVID-19-like symptoms, or have any doubts about your health and/or potential exposure to COVID-19, that you refrain from entering the Hutchinson Center at this time. Get better, then come back! 🙂

The trusted caterers we work with (Bay Wrap, Bell the Cat, Hannaford and Rollie’s) have agreed to provide individual, bagged lunches rather than buffet-style serving. All food will be prepared off-site, according to strict sanitation protocols. Use of kitchens at the Hutchinson Center is limited to staff only. Gloves and face coverings/masks are required for anyone preparing or serving food.

Computer Labs/Student Services

Computer labs will be limited to two workstations in order to accommodate distancing protocols. These resources are available on a limited basis and by appointment only. For an appointment, please call 207.338.8000 or proceed to our student services page. Please be mindful that due to the limited availability of the work stations, the longer the lead time, the better.

Our staff will continue to offer support for students to successfully complete their coursework by connecting them to remote resources. Students and faculty are asked to consider if they can access the resources they need (WiFi, course materials, computer, etc.) from home. Those who can access these resources from home are asked to do so.

Breakout Spaces

Looking for additional breakout space? The Little River Trail starts in our lower parking lot. One of our staff members would be happy to direct you.

If you have any concerns, feedback or questions before, during or after your visit, please contact Hutchinson Center Interim Director, Kim Wilson-Raymond at 207.338.8034 or

Thank you for your flexibility, compassion and for keeping us all safe.
